The flaura and fauna of the state of New Hampshire are the focus of “Something Wild”--part of New Hampshire Public Radio’s environmental programming

The three-minute segments of “Something Wild” are intended to educate the listener about common sights and sounds in New Hampshire’s natural world. According to producer Scott McPherson, the station is thrilled when “Something Wild” elicits the classic listener response: “Huh, I didn’t know that.”

Topics for “Something Wild” have been as commonplace as an examination of why mice get in your attic or bats into your garage, McPherson says. Stories explain the role these pesky creatures play in our natural environment. (Bats, for example, seem to be put on earth to eat mosquitoes, which is a good thing and a good thing to learn.) On “Something Wild” a listener might learn about marbled salamanders or poison ivy, the short-tailed shrew or “firefly flirting.”

The Soil Association helped develop the Food for Life program, an effort to bring more healthful food into Britain’s public schools, where the average cost of a meal is 31 cents. That amount doesn’t allow for the purchase of high quality ingredients.

“If we’ve made you stop, think and learn something, we’ve succeeded,” McPherson said. “Something Wild” is produced with the help of experts at the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire’s Forests and the New Hampshire Audubon Society.

“Stonyfield funding also helps air other environmental programs on NHPR, including news coverage on urban sprawl, a topic of increasing concern in the state. “We’re able to do more now, with more in-depth coverage and reaching more areas of the state,” McPherson said.

Funding also helps provide coverage of national public policy debates over clean air and clean water, and environmental topics on the popular “All Things Considered” program.
